1H 12-20 HCP, 5 or 7 hearts
This bid is natural! Its only promises 12-20 HCP and either 5 or 7 hearts. Since 7 card suits are a bit rare, responder can feel fairly safe in temporarily assuming that opener only has a 5 card suit.

Opener has one of five possible types of hands:

1. Long hearts (exactly 7), maybe a 4 cm.

2. 5 hearts and one or both 4 cms.

3. A good balanced hand with 12-16 or 17-20 HCP, a 5332 type shape and 5 hearts.

5. 5-4-4-0 type hand.

This bid is NON-forcing. Responder may pass with a bust hand.

1H pretty much shows a standard type hand - and yet, there are extra tid bits worth mentioning. For one thing, opener can not have 6 or 8+ hearts. If that were the case, then opener should have used the 1C opening bid, followed by a NIL heart bid. On the other hand, if opener immediately rebids heartss, then he/she has a 7 card suit.

It is important to remember that, if opener only has a 5CM and no second bid, then opener should use the 1N opening bid first!

From this point on, the partners may use any system and/or convention they may prefer.

A couple of comments about responder bids:

These responder bids are NOT mandatory. Each partnership may use its own continuations, conventions and gadgets after the 1H opening bid.

On the other hand, using these continuations, thereby allowing opener a second "free" bid, will provide responder with much more information.

If you look carefully at the 1N, 2C and 2D responses, you will note that the 2C and 2D responses are artificial. In fact, the 2C and 2D responses are suggestions by Ron Klinger. One would be wise to give those a closer look!
