1D 12-20 HCP, 2+ diamonds
This bid is natural! Usually opener has 4+ diamonds and 12-20 HCP, unless opener rebids 1N showing 16-18 and a balanced hand, in which case, opener is likely to have at least 2 diamonds.
Opener has one of five possible types of hands:
1. Long diamonds alone, no other 4+ suit.
2. 4+ diamonds and a 4 card major.
3. 4+ diamonds and 4+ clubs.
4. A strong balanced hand with 16-18 or 19-21 HCP.
5. 5-4-4-0 or 4-4-4-1 type hand.
This bid is NON-forcing. Responder may pass with a bust hand, i.e., less than 5 HCP.
1D pretty much shows a standard type hand - the only difference being that opener usually denies any 5+ card major, the exceptions being 6-5 type hands.
From this point on, the partners may use any system and/or convention they may prefer.
