ARTIFICIAL BID - ABSOLUTELY FORCING ! ! !

Opener has one of six possible types of hands:

1. Long clubs alone, no other 4+ suit.
2. 5+ clubs and a 4 card major.
3. 5+ clubs, 4+ diamonds and 21+ HCP.
4. A good balanced hand with 17-20 or 24+ HCP.
     and 44, 45, 54 55 distribution in the majors.
5. A 6 or 8+ card major, with or without a side suit.
6. A 4-4-4-1 or 5-4-4-0 type hand.

If 1N is the lynchpin of the GaLwood Partnership Agreement, then 1C is its glue.

1C is the only level 1 bid which is forcing.

RESPONDER MUST ENSURE THAT OPENER HAS A REBID, PERIOD!

It is from this bid that much information flows, much more so than any other opening bid.

A word of caution about 1C: it is actually possible for opener to have a void or only one club. Suppose opener has a 6+ suit (H or S), then the possibility is very real. Responder needs to keep that in mind.

I've been told that this bid is complicated. I disagree. It is no more complicated than the SAYC 1C opener, or the Acol one, or any other. When you think about it, you soon realize that all 1C bids signal all kinds of possibilities and options in other systems - all kinds! The GaLwood 1C opener is much simpler. Those are the only 6 possibilities left after the 1D, 1H, 1S and 1N opening bids. If you have doubts, get a sheet of paper and write down all the shapes and point counts associated with the other level 1 opening bids, and you'll see that GaLwood's 1C bid covers the remaining 6 possibilities and even a couple of others as well.

I've also been told that this bid is overloaded. While that SEEMS to be true, at least initially, things do shake out immediately upon opener's second bid. Once opener makes his/her second bid, responder pretty knows what opener has.

Notice that 1C denies any 5 or 7 card major. If opener fails to bid hearts or spades on his/her second round bid, then it is also a denial of a 6 or 8+ card major, and since opener did not show any distribution having both majors, opener has, at the very most, one 4CM, either hearts or spades.

Just like 2/1, any responder bid at the 2 level is game forcing, except for 2C which indicates that responder has a weak hand with a 5+ card suit.

This strategy ensures that responder IS the partnership's captain, UNLESS responder has a game forcing hand, in which case, either partner can become captain, or responder has a very weak hand.
