Introduction

GaLwood is based on a thorough statistical analysis of the general distribution of hands, both shape and HCP (high card points), as well as an amalgamation of various ideas, thoughts, and theories.

GaLwood is NOT (necessarily) A REPLACEMENT of other systems. As much as 2/1 is an evolution from SAYC, Galwood is an evolution from 2/1. Those who like 2/1 can still use it! Those who like SAYC can still use it as well! Even the French SEF and British ACOL users can benefit greatly!

The real power of GaLwood is that a responder will know more about opener's hand a lot quicker and with greater accuracy!

GaLwood:

1.  Provides an easy method for showing NT type hands with 13-16, 17-20, 21-23 and 24+ HCP, with, at most, one rebid.

2.  Has an unlimited forcing 1C opening bid showing 12-37 HCP.  From this bid, opener's second bid will show any one of:

     a.  A 6 card major or, an 8+ card major with only one rebid;
     b.  A strong NT hand, with 17-20 or 21+ HCP; and both majors
     c.  A strong unbalanced hand with both minors, 21+ HCP;
     d.  A 4+ club suit along with maybe one 4 card major;
     e.  Long clubs with or without another 4+ card suit.

3.  Uses 1H or 1S to show:

     a.  A 5 card major - or a 7 card major with only one rebid;
     b.  A 5 card major with 13-16 or 17-20 HCP and 5332 type shape;
     c.  A 5 card major with a 4-6 card minor;

4.  Has a strong 2C opening bid showing an unbalanced 21+ HCP hand with at least one "long" minor and a 1C-2D reversal showing an unbalanced hand with one or both minors.

5. Uses the 1D opening bid as a catch all, for all other situations.

6.  Accepts 2/1 like responses over 1H/1S opening bids, if the partnership agrees, or use Ron Klinger's suggested responses, for lack of fits, of 1N for 6-9 HCP, 2C for 10-12 HCP, 2D for 13+ HCP.

7.  Allows for very easy integration of commonly used conventions and gadgets.

“GaLwood combines some of the best features of SAYC (5 card majors) and ACOL (the weak no-trump), and even uses a natural 1-diamond opening for increased constructive & competitive bidding. You can bolt the opening structure onto whatever natural system you currently play (SAYC or 2/1), so there are no complex sequences to learn. I recommend it for intermediate to advanced players who want to give an edge to their game by improving their bidding technology.”
